The Madras High Court on Thursday quashed proceedings against actor Vijay, producer A M Rathnam and director Perarasu, pending before Judicial Magistrates courts in the State in connection with the film Sivakasi, over allegedly hurting the sentiments of advocates.
In his judgment, Justice R Ragupathi observed that the film industry had social and moral responsibilities and it was expected that they would produce good and healthy artistic material for the public that would not corrupt the minds of the public and tear the fine fabric of co-existence of different sections of people.
Complaints had been filed against Vijay, the producer and the director alleging opprobrious visual artistic work designed against lawyers and the legal profession in the film. Responding to this, the petitioners submitted that the only purpose behind producing the movie was to entertain viewers.
Justice Ragupathi said that the objectionable scenes were removed on realising that the legal profession had been, to a considerable extent, degraded. The petitioners, feeling penitent, had filed separate affidavits tendering apology.
